SARGASSO PLASTIC WASTE RECLAMATION PROJECT

We are scaling our ocean-plastic waste reclamation project to set up in-house hot washing lines for PET flakes production. The facility will enable us to increase our current ocean-plastic waste  collection capacity from 7 tonnes to 15-20 tonnes weekly. This follows our commitment to keep maritime environments safer, cleaner and more habitable to both humans and sea creatures, to create more job opportunities for the locals through plastic waste collection, and to meet the increasing PET flakes demand from our customers in the ocean-bound plastic markets, locally and overseas.

Value  Proposition

Our commitment is to create a safer, cleaner and more habitable maritime environment along the African coastal regions through plastic waste collection and recycling into innovative and on-demand products such as PET flakes for polyester strapping and in the manufacture of textile and wearables. We offer both ocean-bound plastic in a recycled form, and plastic credits linked to ocean-bound plastic sold on recycling markets. We mainly deal with; Polyethylene Terephthalate(PET) collected from Water & Soda bottles; High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) collected from food and beverage containers, cleaning product bottles, pipes, cutting boards, and some shoe parts; and Polypropylene (PP)  collected from bottles, jars, yogurt containers, hot beverage cups, and food packaging.

THE PAIN

Our site is located in Malindi town, Kenya. Malindi is one of the largest Coastal towns in East Africa and it sits amid a string of tropical beaches dotted with hotels and resorts. Malindi Marine National Park, and the nearby Watamu Marine National Park are home to turtles and colorful fish. This attracts a lot of tourists and the vibrant nature of the town subject it to severe plastic waste and other pollutants amounting to hundreds of tonnes of garbage daily which end up in the ocean. Our current capabilities allow us to collect at least 7 tonnes of plastic waste weekly, and do washing, shredding and bailing of the plastics. We lack modern processing equipment, specifically a hot washing line. This limits our capacity to collect more plastic waste, and also hinders us from producing better quality PET flakes for our international customers. We are therefore proposing to acquire a hot washing machine dedicated to PET, with a second machine dedicated to HDPE as a longer-term investment target.

IMPACT

By setting up our own hot washing lines, we will be able to;

● Increase our collection capacity by more than 50%, from 7 tonnes to 15-20 tonnes weekly, thus multiplying our impact, making our maritime environment safer, cleaner, and more habitable.
● Create more job opportunities for the locals especially youth, women and more deprived individuals within fishing communities; the groups who assist us doing the collection and provide labor for our collection fleet and processing facility.
● Boost our production of the best quality PET flakes, thus leveraging us to tap the international market, strengthen our financial productivity and ability to offer fair wages across our operation
● Empower the coastal communities economically by sustaining their livelihoods through job creation.
● Grow our sales and increase revenues and re-investable profits.
